CourseForum Technologies is pleased to offer free hosting of ProjectForum groups for open source Tcl/Tk projects. Hosting is provided at tcl.projectforum.com.
If you have such a project, and are interested in having a collaborative workspace for exclusive use of your project and its team members, please email tcl@projectforum.com with some basic project info to ask for your own site.
You get a ProjectForum site for your project that is basically the same as you'd get by paying for a "Good" site on our regular ProjectForum hosting service (please read the details).
Basically, you can think of this as a private Wiki-like area dedicated to your Tcl project and its developers. It allows you to password protect your area if you want (keeping it totally private or just preventing changes), maintain a version history of all pages, attach files like design documents or images, and lots of other useful things (see the feature list for details).
No way! The Tcler's Wiki offers a fantastic community-wide resource, and is a great source of all kinds of information.
This service is for groups working on a specific project to have a little area they can use to hash things out, totally dedicated to their project, and providing some extra tools that will really help them work together on the project.
SourceForge is great at providing CVS, mailing lists, bug databases, hosting for file downloads, and all sorts of good stuff for open source projects.
It doesn't though, have good facilities for small workgroups to interact, in a nice, flexible, free-form manner. That's what ProjectForum provides. It's no surprise that a lot of open source projects that use SourceForge also run Wiki sites. With this service, you can have a Wiki site without having to worry about finding a server to put it on, etc. Plus, you get a much more powerful and easier to use software package (some bias here!).
We actually don't want people using this for all the things SourceForge provides. In particular, keep your files and download site there, not here. And if you're looking for an extremely high-traffic site with tons of people constantly visiting and/or contributing, please look elsewhere.
ProjectForum is written in Tcl, and Mark has long been involved with the Tcl community. This is something we needed for one of our own projects anyway, and it provides a genuine good faith way to give something back to the whole community. We also get some benefits in terms of some solid feedback from a hardcore group of users, possibly some good exposure, and an outside chance that this may generates some other opportunities for us for non-Tcl project groups.
We certainly expect so. While we can't predict the future, we don't see any reason this service could not be continued for a very long time to come. If for some reason we couldn't continue it ourselves, we'd do our best to work with others to find a way to continue it.
Read the hosting service details, check the general terms, etc. Pay attention to disk space usage and don't use a huge amount of our bandwidth. You're responsible for backups (which you can use to move to your own server if you want). We get to decide if your project is appropriate to host or not. If a site gets abandoned, we'll eventually delete it (after checking with you first).
If in doubt, just email us.
